Why UniFi rather than other platforms?
One platform. No recurring network licence.
UniFi integrates Wi‑Fi, switching, the perimeter and site interconnection in a single operations console. Capital is spent on hardware; the controller is not a subscription. Gateway SD‑WAN interconnects links and sites with no per-site fee.
Access
Physical access is administered in that console. Offboarding revokes wireless access, VPN and the door reader together; the video record for that opening remains attached to the same event.
SuperLink
Protect sensors — leak, opening, occupancy — at ranges of up to approximately two kilometres. Signalling arrives on the network supervision panel, without a separate sensor platform.
One management plane
Access points, PoE, site-to-site VPN, guest networks and topology are supervised under a single operator identity, including video and door control.
Cisco and Fortinet do not include video surveillance or door control in the same system as the LAN: those are separate product families. The commercial model is a monthly or annual licence. Non-payment interrupts operation as a managed network; on Meraki, forwarding. Five-year accumulated cost is several times that of UniFi.
On wireless and access security, UniFi implements the set required of a professional site: WPA3 and WPA3‑Enterprise, 802.1X with RADIUS, VLAN segmentation, access-control lists, site-to-site VPN and Entra ID. On those standards it stands with subscription platforms. On unifying network, video and access under one policy, the scope is broader. A next-generation firewall with contracted threat intelligence retains greater IPS depth; UniFi does not replace that layer when the project requires it.
Aruba Instant On provides competent Wi‑Fi and switching and does not levy a network licence. It does not include an SD‑WAN gateway, video surveillance, door control or long-range sensors. Completing the scope requires ClearPass or another vendor. A deployment limited to Instant On does not cover the functions UniFi already operates in the same interface.
